Half of them outsold traditional publishing. Four of them just asked nicely.

This week is an indie freebie, and I have been waiting for this one since roughly the day I started the site.
Here is the thing about romantasy that people outside the genre keep missing: indie is not the minor league. Some of the biggest books on my shelf of 750+ titles started as one person, one manuscript, and a cover they commissioned themselves. So this list is ten indies in two halves. Five that got so big you may not realize they started small, and five I would never have found if the authors had not turned up in my inbox and told me about them.
When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker. Dragons die and become moons. That is the premise, delivered by a self-published author with no marketing budget, and it went on to outsell most of what traditional publishing put out that year. Raeve is an assassin with a hole where her memory should be, the worldbuilding is the most inventive thing I have read this decade, and the sequel To Snap a Silver Stem picks up without mercy.
Quicksilver by Callie Hart. Saeris steals from the wrong place and lands in a fae realm with a swordsman who does not want her there. It is a 5 on our spice scale, the banter is genuinely funny, and it moved so many copies on word of mouth that the publishing industry came to it rather than the other way round.
The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent. A human raised by a vampire king enters a tournament designed to kill her. Broadbent self-published this, readers made it a phenomenon, and Tor picked up the whole Crowns of Nyaxia series afterward. Oraya deserved every bit of it.
Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole. Diem is a mortal healer in a world run by immortals, and the prince she is supposed to hate keeps failing to be hateable. Four books deep, a Hulu adaptation in progress, and it started as an indie release nobody had heard of. Our full series guide covers the whole arc.
A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair. Persephone signs a bargain with Hades in a modern New Athens and immediately regrets the terms. Every Greek retelling on your feed owes this book something. Self-published in 2019, and the genre has not stopped since.
Speck discovers a mythical world where dragons hatch from the lunar sky, and she finds herself caught between protectors and hunters. The warrior who finds her is complex and dangerous, but he teaches her that power comes in many forms. As dragons emerge and the stakes rise, she must choose which world she truly belongs to.
A morally gray hero draws a woman into his dangerous supernatural world with no escape, igniting dark attraction and forbidden connection. Power imbalance and danger create obsessive romance. She discovers that love with such a man is both salvation and ruin.
A paranormal romance where danger and supernatural passion collide in a world of ancient magic and forbidden connection. Two souls bound by fate and danger discover their bond might be their only salvation. Love here means accepting the darkness within and without.
Enemies transform into lovers as they move through political fantasy and revolution across a world on fire. Each is bound to a side of an escalating conflict that threatens to consume everything. Slow-burn passion ignites as they discover their power is strongest together.
A paranormal woman is drawn to a being of shadow and supernatural power in a dark, dangerous romance. Magic and attraction bind them in ways that defy logic and survival instinct. She discovers that darkness can hold unexpected tenderness.
This half is the part I actually want to talk about. The site has a submissions page, and for months I assumed it would sit there collecting spam. Instead authors started using it, and these are theirs.
Poison and Honey by Kristen Brand. Leigh poses as a servant in a fae palace to find her stolen sister and does not plan on the prince. Low heat, high scheming, spice 1 with all the longing intact. The first submission the shelf ever received, and it set a high bar.
Savage Monsters by Renee Asher. Renee submitted this on the day it released, which is a level of confidence I respect enormously. Floating isles held up by chains, a girl carrying a lunar goddess that three heirs need to claim, and wyverns dropping out of the sky. Multi POV, why choose, dark romantasy with the fantasy plot doing real work.
Adversary by Emma Leckey-Jamison. She goes back in time to stop a dark magician before he becomes a monster and ends up soul-bonded to him instead. Dark academia, morally grey to the bone, and easily the best premise I have been sent. If enemies to lovers is your entire personality, this one is for you.
The Place by the same author, submitted the same afternoon, because Emma does not do things by halves. A faery at a magical university, twins she cannot choose between, and students who keep disappearing. Sweeter than Adversary and completely different in tone, which is a neat trick for one writer.
A Rivalry of Hearts by Tessonja Odette. My own indie TBR entry, not a submission. Fae Flings and Corset Strings is a cozy rival-authors romance with fae, and it has been sitting on my list long enough to be embarrassing. I will fix that this month.

A faery student arrives at a magical university and promptly collects two problems: twin boys she cannot choose between, and a growing suspicion that she is not actually a faery at all. When students start disappearing and the disappearances turn to murders, she does the math on who is likely next. Cozy-cover fae mystery with a why choose thread and a body count.
