1. The agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and The Fae Shelf. They cover the website thefaeshelf.com and The Fae Shelf iOS app. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use The Fae Shelf.
Our privacy policy and the community guidelines below are part of these terms.
2. Your account
- One person, one account. Do not share it or sell it.
- Give us a real email address and keep your sign-in safe. You are responsible for what happens on your account.
- Do not pretend to be someone else, including an author, unless you have claimed and verified your author page.
- Pick a username that follows the community guidelines. We may change one that does not.
3. Age and mature content
You must be at least 18 to make an account on The Fae Shelf. Romantasy often includes adult themes. In the iOS app, books, reviews and threads rated heat 4 or 5 stay hidden until you switch them on in Settings, and you can hide them again at any time.
4. Your content
Your reviews, ratings, threads, replies, lists and shelfie photos are yours. By posting them, you give The Fae Shelf a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, adapt for layout and share them within The Fae Shelf and in our own promotion of it, for example a featured shelfie on our social accounts with credit to you. The licence ends when you delete the content, except for copies others have already shared or that we must keep by law.
When you post, you confirm that:
- You wrote it or have the right to post it.
- You took the shelfie photo yourself or have permission, and it does not show other people without their consent.
- It follows the community guidelines.
5. Spoilers and heat labels
Mark spoilers with the spoiler toggle or double bars. Threads about endings must use the spoiler setting. Heat votes should reflect what is on the page, using our spice rating guide. Our editors may relabel posts so readers are not surprised.
6. Our content
Our articles, heat ratings, illustrations, design and code belong to The Fae Shelf or our licensors. Book covers, titles and blurbs belong to their publishers and authors and appear for identification and review. You may share links and short quotes with credit. Do not scrape, copy or republish our content at scale.
7. The iOS app
These terms also act as the end user licence agreement for The Fae Shelf iOS app. We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the Apple Media Services Terms. Apple's standard licensed application end user licence agreement applies to anything not covered here, including any in-app purchases.
These terms are between you and The Fae Shelf, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, has no duty to provide support or maintenance, and is not responsible for any claims about the app. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
8. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time in Settings, Account, Delete account. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or the community guidelines, or that put other readers at risk. When we can, we tell you why and how to appeal by emailing hello@thefaeshelf.com.
9. Disclaimers and liability
Heat ratings, release dates and summaries are our best editorial judgment. They can be wrong or change. Posts by readers are their own views, not ours. The service is provided as it is, and we cannot promise it will always be available or error free.
To the extent the law allows, The Fae Shelf is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for losses caused by other users or by third-party sites you reach through our links. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer.
10. Law and changes
If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in your local courts. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will tell you at least 14 days before the change takes effect.
Community guidelines
The Fae Shelf works because readers trust each other with the books they love. These rules keep it that way.
Be kind
Disagree with the take, not the person. No insults, mocking or pile-ons.
Tag spoilers
Plot twists, deaths and endings go behind the spoiler toggle. Every time.
No harassment or hate
No threats, stalking, doxxing, slurs or attacks based on identity. This includes authors.
Keep images clean
Shelfies and avatars only. No explicit or sexual images, no gore, no photos of people without consent.
No piracy
No links to pirated books, PDFs or leaked chapters. Support the authors you love.
Authors, share, do not spam
Claim your author page and post news there. One self-promo thread per book. No review swaps or paid ratings.
How reporting works
- Tap the three dots on any review, thread, reply, photo or profile and choose Report.
- Pick a reason. Add a note if it helps. The person is not told who reported them.
- Our moderators review every report within 24 hours. Clear breaches are hidden straight away.
- You can block any user. They can no longer see your profile, reply to you or follow you.
What happens when rules are broken
Serious breaches can skip straight to step 4. You can appeal any decision by emailing hello@thefaeshelf.com.
Affiliate disclosure
Some links on The Fae Shelf are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps keep the site free.
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. We are also affiliates of Bookshop.org, which shares profits with independent bookshops, and Audible.
Our heat ratings, star ratings, rankings and reviews are editorial. Publishers and authors cannot pay for a rating, a place in a list or a review. If we ever receive a free copy of a book, we say so on that book's page.
