The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (Spice 0). Verdict: Frosty. Zero heat and all atmosphere, set in a Russian village where the old household spirits are fading. Best read under a blanket with something warm.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (Spice 1). Verdict: Bookish. Libraries full of dangerous grimoires, a sorcerer and his demon servant, and a romance that creeps up on you in the stacks. Pure comfort for anyone who loves a slow burn romance.
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas (Spice 4). Verdict: Seismic. The sequel that changed the genre conversation and, for a lot of us, our reading lives. Heat jumps up from the first book, so check the rating before you lend it to your aunt.
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco (Spice 2). Verdict: Moody. A witch in Sicily goes hunting for whoever killed her twin sister and ends up bargaining with a prince of Hell. Mystery first, flirting second, and a very fun mix.
Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros (Spice 3.5). Verdict: Chaotic. The third Empyrean book keeps the dragons, the danger and the tension turned up high. Read the earlier two first or none of it will land.
