Lou leans harder into dark magic with every chapter, and it visibly changes her, by the end she is colder and more reckless in ways Reid can see and cannot stop. The death that guts everyone: Ansel is killed by Morgane at Modraniht. It is sudden, cruel, and the emotional low point of the trilogy. Coco's blood magic grows in importance. The book ends on a dark cliffhanger with Lou not fully herself, the direct setup for Gods and Monsters, not with the relationship in a stable place.
Readers who loved Serpent & Dove's enemies-to-lovers will devour this. Fans of dark fantasy romance with political intrigue and morally gray characters. This one gets darker and messier, not for readers seeking cozy romance or clear heroes and villains.
