A Court of Silver Flames came out in January 2021. A Court of Splintered Harmony came out on October 27, 2026. That is a long time to hold a Night Court family tree in your head, and if you are standing in front of your shelf wondering whether you need to reread 2,700 pages first, this is for you.
Below is a book-by-book recap of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, a who-is-who for the people who matter going in, and the loose threads the new book picks up. Fair warning: this recap spoils books 1 to 5 completely. It does not spoil A Court of Splintered Harmony at all. Everything I say about book 6 comes from the official description and what Sarah J. Maas has said publicly.
The Whole Series in 60 Seconds
Feyre Archeron, a starving human hunter, kills a wolf that turns out to be a faerie and is taken across the wall to Prythian by Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court. She saves Prythian from the tyrant Amarantha, dies doing it, and is brought back as High Fae. Traumatized and smothered at the Spring Court, she finds her way to Rhysand and the Night Court, where she discovers they are mates and becomes High Lady. Together with the Inner Circle they win a war against the King of Hybern, who turned Feyre's sisters Nesta and Elain into Fae with the Cauldron. Then the series hands the pen to Nesta, who claws her way back from grief and self-destruction, finds her mate in Cassian, revives the ancient Valkyries with her friends Gwyn and Emerie, and makes an enemy of Koschei, a death god bound to a lake. That is where we left everyone, and that is exactly where Splintered Harmony starts pulling.
A Court of Thorns and Roses
Sarah J. MaasWhen nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a terrifying creature demands blood as payment. Imprisoned in a magical faerie prison with the immortal warrior Rhysand, Feyre discovers a curse far darker than she imagined. Her choices now will determine the fate of both the human and faerie worlds.
GoodreadsA Court of Mist and Fury

In a world of privilege and beauty, cruelty and nightmares, she must learn to trust in order to survive.
GoodreadsA Court of Wings and Ruin
Sarah J. MaasFeyre has returned to the Spring Court, tasked with gathering intelligence for the Night Court while her heart remains with Rhysand. GoodreadsA Court of Frost and Starlight
Sarah J. MaasAfter the devastating war, the Night Court begins to heal with Feyre and Rhysand rebuilding their shattered world. New dangers emerge as old secrets surface and enemies gather. Feyre must confront the trauma of the war while deciding what kind of leader she wants to become.
GoodreadsA Court of Silver Flames
Sarah J. MaasNesta Archeron has survived the war, but barely. Rife with shame and rage, she isolates herself until Cassian, the winged warrior she's despised, offers her a second chance. As their connection deepens, they must confront dangerous forces and their own demons.
GoodreadsA Court of Thorns and Roses (2015): Spring Court and Under the Mountain
Nineteen-year-old Feyre keeps her family alive by hunting. When she kills a wolf in the woods, the Treaty demands a life for a life, and Tamlin, a High Lord in beast form, takes her back to his estate in the Spring Court. Everyone there wears a mask they cannot take off, magic is failing because of a blight, and Tamlin's emissary Lucien is equal parts charming and hostile.
Feyre falls for Tamlin, but the curse behind everything belongs to Amarantha, who has seized Prythian and holds its High Lords under the mountain. Feyre goes after Tamlin, strikes a deal with Amarantha for three trials, and makes a second, stranger bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court: he heals her shattered arm, and she owes him one week a month at his court. She solves Amarantha's riddle (the answer is love), breaks the curse, and dies in the process. The seven High Lords each give a spark of their power to bring her back, and she wakes up High Fae. Heat on our scale: 2 of 5.
A Court of Mist and Fury (2016): The Night Court
Back in the Spring Court, Feyre is drowning in trauma and Tamlin's protection turns into control, ending with him sealing her inside the manor. Mor gets her out, and Feyre lands in the Night Court, which is nothing like its terrifying reputation. Behind the cruel Court of Nightmares, Rhysand protects Velaris, a hidden city of art and light, with his Inner Circle: Cassian and Azriel, his Illyrian brothers in arms, his cousin Mor, and Amren, something ancient wearing a small body.
The King of Hybern wants to bring down the wall between Fae and humans using the Cauldron, so the group hunts for the Book of Breathings, which can nullify it. Feyre learns she carries a sliver of every High Lord's power, and that Rhysand has known for a long time that she is his mate. The book ends in disaster: Hybern throws Nesta and Elain into the Cauldron and they come out Fae, Lucien recognizes Elain as his mate, and Feyre fakes a broken mating bond so she can go back to the Spring Court as a spy. Heat on our scale: 4 of 5.
A Court of Wings and Ruin (2017): The War with Hybern
Feyre takes the Spring Court apart from the inside and escapes with Lucien, whose real father turns out to be Helion, High Lord of the Day Court, not Beron of the Autumn Court. The High Lords meet, argue, and finally fight together against Hybern, alongside the human queens' armies and some unexpected allies. Two of those allies matter later: Jurian, an ancient human warrior Hybern brought back from the dead, and Vassa, a human queen cursed by Koschei to live as a firebird by day.
The war is brutal. Feyre's father dies, Elain stabs the King of Hybern and Nesta takes his head, and Amren gives up her ancient form to destroy his army, coming back afterward as an ordinary High Fae. Rhysand dies sealing the cracked Cauldron, and all seven High Lords, Tamlin included, bring him back. Tamlin is left alone in a ruined Spring Court. Heat on our scale: 3 of 5.
A Court of Frost and Starlight (2018): The First Winter Solstice
This is a short bridge book, mostly quiet. Velaris is rebuilding, Feyre opens an art studio, and the Inner Circle celebrates its first Solstice after the war. Underneath the gifts and snow it plants the seeds for what comes next: Nesta drinking and pushing everyone away, Cassian unable to stop caring, Elain withdrawn, Lucien now living in the human lands with Vassa and Jurian, and Feyre and Rhysand starting to talk about a family. Skippable on a reread if you are short on time. Heat on our scale: 2 of 5.
A Court of Silver Flames (2021): Nesta, the Valkyries and Koschei
The point of view moves to Nesta and Cassian. Feyre and Rhysand intervene in Nesta's spiral and move her into the House of Wind, where she trains with Cassian and works in a library carved into the mountain. There she befriends Gwyn, a priestess from Sangravah, and Emerie, an Illyrian whose wings were clipped. The three of them bring back the Valkyries, an ancient order of female warriors, and fight their way through the Illyrian Blood Rite.
The danger this time is the Dread Trove, three objects made from the Cauldron's power: a mask, a harp and a crown. The human queen Briallyn, allied with Koschei, uses the crown to control people, and Eris of the Autumn Court is pulled into a quiet alliance with the Night Court against his father Beron. Feyre's pregnancy turns deadly because her baby has Illyrian wings, and Nesta uses the Trove and her own power to save both of them. The baby is Nyx. Nesta and Cassian accept their mating bond, Briallyn is destroyed, and Koschei is still out there in his lake. Heat on our scale: 4 of 5, and plenty of readers call it the spiciest of the five.
Who Is Who Going Into Book 6
Feyre and Rhysand: High Lady and High Lord of the Night Court, parents of Nyx.
Nesta and Cassian: mated, and Nesta now leads the Valkyries with Gwyn and Emerie.
Elain: Lucien's mate on paper, quietly drawn to Azriel, and the one character fans have been waiting for since the Cauldron.
Azriel: Rhysand's spymaster and shadowsinger, never quite at peace, and close to both Elain and Gwyn.
Mor and Amren: Mor is still the Night Court's diplomat, Amren is still terrifying even without her old powers.
Lucien: son of Helion, living between courts and in the human lands with Vassa and Jurian.
Tamlin: alone in the Spring Court after helping save Rhysand.
Eris: heir of the Autumn Court, playing a long game against his father Beron with the Night Court's help.
Vassa: a human queen still bound to Koschei's lake by his curse.
Koschei the Deathless: a death god trapped in a lake for millennia, and the villain of the new book.
A Court of Splintered Harmony
Sarah J. MaasBook six of A Court of Thorns and Roses opens the Valkyrie Cycle. Koschei the Deathless is stirring in his mountain lake, gathering allies who want the human lands back, while the Night Court struggles to rebuild alliances fractured by betrayals and hard truths. First of three movements. Out October 27, 2026.
GoodreadsThe Threads A Court of Splintered Harmony Picks Up
From the official description, Koschei is stirring and wants out of his lake, he is gathering allies who want the human lands for themselves, and the Night Court has to hold its people together while Prythian is still recovering from the war with Hybern. The description also mentions recent betrayals and revealed truths dividing the court, and the book's line is that what was broken will be remade.
So the threads worth having fresh are: Koschei, Vassa's curse and the lake from Wings and Ruin and Silver Flames; the human queens and the human lands; Eris and the Autumn Court; the Valkyries; the Dread Trove; and every unresolved feeling between Elain, Azriel, Lucien and Gwyn. The book is set about five years after Silver Flames and is the first part of what Maas calls The Valkyrie Cycle. Maas kept the narrators quiet before release, and I will not spoil whose story it is here.
Do You Need to Reread? A Plan for Every Amount of Time
One hour: read this page and the book page for A Court of Splintered Harmony, then start.
One weekend: reread A Court of Silver Flames. It sets up almost everything the new book uses, and it is the most recent.
One week: Silver Flames, then the last third of A Court of Wings and Ruin for Vassa, Jurian, Lucien and the war's fallout.
The full reread: all five, about 2,700 pages. Worth it if you want every callback, but you do not need it to enjoy book 6.
