It takes Lovecraftian ideas (cosmic horror, humanity's insignificance) and filters them through romance without softening what makes those concepts unsettling. The protagonist's slow acceptance of the impossible is handled with genuine character growth instead of instalove. The writing creates real dread without being overwrought.
