Laura Sebastian built her career on a single unfashionable idea: that a fantasy heroine can be genuinely compromised. Her breakout, the Ash Princess trilogy, opens with a captive queen who has spent a decade being paraded in a crown of ashes by the man who murdered her mother, and who has survived by becoming pliable. Theodosia is not secretly a warrior waiting for a sword. She is someone who has adapted to abuse, and the trilogy is about what it costs her to stop adapting. Her second major series pushes the same instinct further. Castles in Their Bones follows the triplet princesses of Bessemia, raised from birth in deception, seduction and violence by a mother who intends to marry each of them into a different kingdom and then bring all three monarchies down from the inside. The trilogy continues with Stardust in Their Veins and Poison in Their Hearts. The structure is the appeal: three point-of-view sisters, three separate courts, three separate romances, all of them undermined by the fact that every sister is a plant with a mission. Readers who love royalty plots and court intrigue get an unusually dense version here.

What defines Sebastian's writing is patience with unlikeable choices. Her protagonists lie, manipulate, and hurt people who trusted them, and the books do not rush to absolve them. She also writes mothers as antagonists more often than most fantasy authors, which gives her work a specific psychological texture. Prose-wise she is clean and slightly formal, closer to Kristin Cashore than to the punchy contemporary voice dominating the genre now. Chapters end on reveals rather than cliffhangers. Her range is real: she has also written Half Sick of Shadows, an adult Arthurian retelling narrated by the Lady of Shalott, and Into the Glades, a middle grade adventure set in an Everglades-inspired swampland.

Heat level is the thing to be candid about. Sebastian writes young adult, and both major series sit at a one, occasionally a two, on our book spice ratings. Romance is central to the plots and largely closed door. Readers arriving from adult romantasy should calibrate expectations accordingly. The content that does need warning is not sexual: Ash Princess involves sustained psychological abuse, torture and self-harm as a coping mechanism, and Castles in Their Bones is heavy on poisoning, coercion and parental cruelty. These are darker books than their covers suggest.

She matters to a romantasy audience as a bridge rather than a destination. A large share of readers who now buy adult fantasy romance came in through young adult court fantasy in the late 2010s, and Sebastian was one of the authors defining that lane alongside the more famous names. Her enemies to lovers pairings in particular hold up, because she is willing to let the enemy part stay genuinely dangerous for most of a book. If you liked the political manoeuvring in The Kiss of Deception but wanted the heroine to be more compromised, Sebastian is the adjustment.

Where to start depends on what you want. For the strongest single reading experience, begin with Ash Princess and read the trilogy through. For the more ambitious structure and the better prose, begin with Castles in Their Bones, but accept that three point-of-view characters across three kingdoms takes a hundred pages to settle. Half Sick of Shadows is the one to pick if you want a standalone with adult framing and a melancholy tone, though it is the least romance-forward of her work. Skip Into the Glades unless you are buying for a younger reader. Her next release, Once Swindled, is due in late August 2026 and opens a new series.
