Emperor Daione is a protagonist you root for despite his ruthlessness. The political maneuvering isn't window dressing, it drives the plot. The worldbuilding expands without feeling scattered.

Violence and murder. Torture including use of bone shard magic on prisoners. Emotional abuse and manipulation. Suicide references. Sacrifice involving pain and loss.

Lin's power over the bone shards is confirmed but comes with dangerous side effects. Daione's past choices haunt him in concrete ways. The island appearance is no accident, it's connected to the magic's ancient origins. A character believed loyal reveals hidden agenda. The bone shard magic is revealed to have created the current suffering, raising questions about what magic is worth.

Book 2 in the trilogy, so you need to read The Bone Shard Daughter first.
