Rose Hathaway is seeing Mason's ghost. It might be grief, or it might be a side effect of being shadow-kissed, bonded to Lissa ever since the car crash that killed the Dragomirs. Rose died in that crash too, and Lissa's spirit magic pulled her back. Nobody knows what shadow-kissed actually costs, and Shadow Kiss is the book where the bill arrives. It's field-experience season at St. Vladimir's: novices guard Moroi students full-time, staged attacks included, and Rose is assigned to Christian Ozera instead of Lissa. Between phantom sightings, spirit's darkness bleeding through the bond, and whatever she and Dimitri refuse to stop feeling, Rose is running out of room to pretend she's fine. Then the wards fail.
The best book in the series, and it isn't close. The ghost mystery pays off the series' own magic system instead of hand-waving it, the Rose-Christian pairing is unexpectedly great, and the cabin scene delivers what two books of restraint were building toward. Then Mead detonates the ending. The last three chapters are the reason this series has a fandom fifteen years on.
Ghosts and death imagery, large-scale attack with multiple deaths, on-page sex (one scene, non-explicit by adult-romantasy standards), depression and rage bleed-through (spirit darkness), a lead character turned against his will.
Rose and Dimitri finally happen, the cabin scene, and hours later the academy is attacked by the largest Strigoi force in its history. The raid to rescue captured students succeeds, except for the part that matters: Dimitri is bitten and turned Strigoi in the caves. Not killed. Turned. Rose drops out of school weeks before graduation and leaves for Siberia to keep an old promise, to find what Dimitri has become and kill it. That decision is the entire plot of Blood Promise.
Nobody starts here, this is the payoff book for Vampire Academy and Frostbite. Readers who love a slow burn that actually burns, and who can handle an ending that hurts on purpose. If bittersweet is a dealbreaker, know what you're walking into.
