Everything You Need to Know About Crush
Crush picks up where Crave left off, Grace is back at Katmere Academy, now a gargoyle after an unexpected transformation, and trying to make sense of a world that keeps shifting under her feet. Hudson, Jaxon's twin brother and a notoriously dangerous vampire, is stuck in her head thanks to a magical bond neither of them wanted. Meanwhile, Jaxon, the brooding love interest from book one, is still very much in the picture, creating a love triangle that drives most of the tension.
The academy itself is still packed with paranormal politics , vampires, wolves, witches, dragons, and Grace is caught in the middle of power plays she barely understands. There are challenges, magical trials, and more than a few moments where Grace has to fight her way out of situations that should kill her. The stakes escalate significantly from Crave, with the broader world of paranormal society starting to press in on the school's bubble.
Hudson. That is the main draw and most readers know it by now. He is sharp, sarcastic, morally ambiguous, and has way more chemistry with Grace than Jaxon ever did. The banter between Hudson and Grace carries the book even through its slower stretches.
The gargoyle mythology is a fun addition, it gives Grace a unique identity in a school full of established paranormal species. The magical trials add some much-needed structure and action to the middle of the book.
Violence during magical trials. A significant love triangle that may frustrate some readers. Imprisonment themes (Hudson was trapped in Grace's mind). Some scenes of emotional manipulation. Brief descriptions of past trauma.
The big moment everyone talks about: Grace chooses Hudson over Jaxon. This is not a surprise to most readers since the chemistry was obvious from the first chapter, but it is still a turning point for the series. Jaxon does not take it well, and the fallout fuels conflict in later books.
The gargoyle transformation is permanent and significant, Grace becomes the first gargoyle in centuries. The political implications ripple out from here. The Ludares tournament is the main set piece and it works well as a climax. Hudson's backstory gets filled in, and it reframes a lot of what happened in Crave.
If you loved Crave and want more of this world, you are going to enjoy Crush even more, most readers agree the series improves from here. Fans of Twilight, Vampire Academy, and Zodiac Academy will feel at home. This is not for you if you need tight pacing , it is a long book and it does take its time.
