Vasilisa Drake Books

Vasilisa Drake is a relatively new name on the romantasy shelf, and the trajectory has been fast. She wrote contemporary romance under a different name for several years before moving into fantasy romance, debuting in the genre with Forsaken Mate and following it with Fatal Goddess. Then came A Bargain So Bloody in June 2025, which Simon & Schuster picked up on both sides of the Atlantic and which became her breakout. The Kingdom of Dark Magic series is now her main line of work, and it is the one readers are finding her through.

A Bargain So Bloody has a premise built for the current market and executed better than the premise alone would suggest. A woman is sentenced to a magical prison for a crime she did not commit, and to survive it she makes a deal with the most dangerous prisoner inside. From there the book runs on confinement, on a bargain that neither party fully understands, and on the slow discovery that the person she is most afraid of is also the only one telling her the truth. Drake's stated interests, dragons, magic, and men who like to bite, are all present without apology.

What defines her writing is the pairing of a genuinely capable heroine with a love interest who is dangerous to everyone except her. That is a well worn shape, and the reason it works here is that Drake does not use the heroine's competence as set dressing. The character solves her own problems more often than she is rescued from them, and her arc is about locating power she already had rather than being handed it by the plot. Around that, the morally gray hero is written as actually morally grey, meaning he does things the reader has to sit with, rather than being described as terrifying while behaving impeccably.

Heat is the thing to know before you start. Drake sits at roughly a 4 on our spice scale. Scenes are explicit, frequent enough to be a defining feature, and they escalate across the book rather than arriving early. The structure is a slow burn that pays off hard in the back half, which is the pattern readers of this corner of the genre tend to want. There is also a fair amount of violence, imprisonment, and coercive circumstance baked into the premise. Check content warnings on the author's own site before committing, since she publishes them and they are worth reading.

Why she matters to a romantasy audience is partly timing and partly craft. The genre has a very large gap between traditionally published romantasy that keeps the heat moderate and indie dark romance that goes further than most readers want. Drake lands in between, with the production polish and distribution of a major publisher and the willingness to write the scenes that indie authors built their audiences on. She is also early enough in her career that catching up takes one weekend rather than one month, which is not nothing given how many series in this space are eight books deep.

Start with A Bargain So Bloody, which is the first book of the Kingdom of Dark Magic series and the strongest entry point by some distance. It is a series rather than a standalone, so expect open threads at the end. Her earlier fantasy romance titles, Forsaken Mate and Fatal Goddess, are separate from this world and can be read in any order if you want more of her voice. If you liked the vampire court politics and heat level of The Serpent and the Wings of Night, or the confined trial structure it uses, Drake is a very natural next read.
