Fonda Lee wrote her way into fantasy's top tier with a mob story. A Canadian-American former corporate strategist with black belts in karate and kung fu, she debuted in 2015 with the young adult science fiction novel Zeroboxer, followed by Exo and Cross Fire. Then in 2017 came Jade City, the opening of the Green Bone Saga, and everything changed: the novel won the World Fantasy Award and the Aurora Award in 2018, was named one of Time Magazine's 100 best fantasy novels of all time, and has been optioned for television.

The Green Bone Saga is best described as The Godfather with magic jade. On the island of Kekon, jade grants trained warriors superhuman speed, strength, and perception, and the clans who control it run the city of Janloon like crime families. Jade War expands the conflict internationally, and Jade Legacy closes the trilogy across a generation, an ending that left much of the fantasy community wrecked in the best way. The novella The Jade Setter of Janloon and the standalone Untethered Sky, her 2023 tale of rocs and monster hunting, round out the adult shelf, while Breath of the Dragon, co-written with Shannon Lee, launched a martial arts fantasy series in 2025 that made best-of-year lists from the New York and Chicago public libraries and reached the Goodreads Choice Award finals.

What defines Lee's writing is discipline. Her action scenes are the best in modern fantasy, choreographed by someone who has actually thrown the punches, and her plotting has a strategist's patience: alliances, betrayals, and economics that hold up under scrutiny. Her characters are clan first and self second, which makes every private desire a potential betrayal. The Kaul siblings of Janloon, brash Hilo, dutiful Lan, brilliant Shae, are among the great fantasy families, and the books make you love people who do genuinely terrible things, a hallmark of well-executed morally gray writing.

On heat, keep expectations modest: a 1 to 2 on our spice ratings. There is sex and real romantic weight, Hilo and Wen's marriage is one of the saga's emotional engines, and Anden's arc includes a tender queer romance, but intimacy happens mostly off page and the story never pauses for it. This is fantasy where love is a strategic liability and a source of grief, not the plot's destination.

For romantasy readers, Lee is the genre-adjacent author most worth crossing over for. If you came to fantasy through romance and want to test deeper waters, the Green Bone Saga offers the same addictive loyalty-and-betrayal dynamics as your favorite fae court intrigue, executed with ruthless precision, and its family bonds hit the same nerves as the best found family stories, just with higher body counts. She is a palate cleanser in the truest sense: different enough to reset your reading brain, good enough to keep you up past midnight anyway.

Lee is also one of the genre's sharpest public thinkers about craft. Her essays and talks on action writing, pacing, and the business of publishing circulate widely among aspiring authors, and her July 2025 announcement of a Green Bone Saga tabletop roleplaying game, Streets of Jade, alongside new gold-edition reissues of the trilogy, shows a writer tending her world with unusual care. Few fantasy authors manage a universe this coherent across novels, novellas, games, and a potential television adaptation without diluting it.

Start with Jade City, obviously, and read the trilogy in order; the cumulative weight of Jade Legacy is the whole point. Untethered Sky is a fine single-sitting introduction to her prose if you want to sample before committing. Breath of the Dragon is the entry for younger readers or anyone who wants tournament-style martial arts fantasy. Whatever you do, do not skip the trilogy's ending. It earns every page.
