A rival claimant emerges who has legitimate grievances about succession. Rowen and Ella deal with the final stages of the curse's unraveling, which demands a sacrifice neither expected.

Rowen finally gets his arc as the central figure, not just Ella's love interest. The magic reaches its most detailed form, there's real consequence and cost to everything. The romance deepens into partnership and difficult choices. Secondary characters from books 1-3 play critical roles.

Major sacrifice/death. Grief and loss. Magical backlash with serious consequences. Betrayal within inner circle. Body horror elements involving magic.
