Radiance
A political marriage between a human woman and a non-human man begins as duty but becomes genuine connection. Each brings their own fears, expectations, and hidden depths to the relationship. Their love defies prejudice and redefines what happiness looks like.
Everything You Need to Know About Radiance
Oraya has spent her entire life as the only human in the House of Night, a vampire kingdom where she is the adopted daughter of the Nightborn King. She has trained herself into a lethal fighter to survive, but she is still fragile in a world of immortals who see her as prey. When a deadly tournament called the Kejari is announced, she enters to win a single wish from the goddess Nyaxia , the power to protect herself permanently.
Rishan, a vampire from the rival House of Shadow, enters the Kejari for his own reasons. He and Oraya become reluctant allies in the tournament's brutal trials, and what starts as strategic cooperation turns into something neither expected. But the Kejari has its own agenda, and the politics between the vampire houses run deeper than either of them realized. Oraya's relationship with her father, the King, starts to crack as she uncovers truths about what he has really been doing in the name of protecting her.
Oraya is a standout protagonist. She is not powerful by birth, everything she has, she earned through training and stubbornness. In a genre full of 'chosen ones,' she feels refreshingly self-made. The tournament structure gives the book natural pacing and stakes. Each trial raises the danger and forces Oraya and Rishan closer together.
The vampire world-building is excellent , three houses, a real goddess, and political structures that feel like they have weight. Broadbent does not just slap fangs on a generic fantasy kingdom. The romance is slow-burn done right, built on shared vulnerability rather than just banter.
Tournament violence (including death of participants). Vampire-on-human predation themes. A controlling parental figure who is revealed to be abusive. Descriptions of blood drinking. The power imbalance between humans and vampires is a constant source of tension.
The Nightborn King is the villain. Oraya's father has been feeding on humans and keeping Oraya as a pet project, not a daughter. When she discovers this, it shatters her entire identity. Rishan is revealed to be actively working against the King through the Rishan rebellion, his entry into the Kejari was always political.
The Kejari itself is a trap set by Nyaxia with her own divine agenda. Oraya wins but the 'wish' is more complicated than a simple gift. The book ends with Oraya's world completely upended , her father exposed, her alliance with Rishan deepening into something real, and the Houses on the verge of war. The cliffhanger is brutal.
If you loved ACOTAR's first book but wished it had tighter world-building and a harder protagonist, Radiance is your book. Also a great pick for fans of From Blood and Ash, Vampire Academy, or anyone who wants a tournament arc with real consequences.
Not the best entry point if you want a standalone, this ends on a cliffhanger and you will need the sequel. Also not for readers who dislike slow-burn; the payoff takes time.
Radiance is book 1 of The Crowns of Nyaxia series. Followed by The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King (book 2) and The Songbird and the Heart of Stone (book 3, different POV couple). Read Radiance and Ashes as a pair, they are one continuous story.
