Everything You Need to Know About Midnight Dunes

A woman with a dangerous past finds refuge in a small Montana town where she meets a man who has his own reasons to stay off the grid. The romance builds slowly as they circle each other warily, both terrified of what they might lose. Perry balances intimate character moments with a broader mystery about who's looking for the woman and why. The setting becomes as important as the relationship, this town is a character too.

The slow-burn romance feels realistic. The banter has bite without being try-hard. Perry's gift for small-town atmosphere means you'll fall in love with the setting and the cast of secondary characters. The chemistry between the leads is earned through pages of careful tension. The spice scenes are integrated naturally into the story, not interrupting it. The emotional stakes feel personal rather than world-ending, which is refreshing.

Violence related to the woman's past, mentions of abuse, danger and threat throughout, drinking, and morally grey characters making questionable choices.

The woman is running from an abusive ex who has connections to dangerous people. The man she falls for is a former criminal laying low. They help each other hide in plain sight in the town. The climax forces them out of hiding as the ex tracks her down, resulting in a confrontation that ends with the ex arrested and the woman choosing to stay rather than run. The resolution is that they both get to stop hiding, the town accepts them anyway.

Readers who love small-town contemporary romance with genuine danger lurking in the background. If you loved Colleen Hoover's contemporary work (but better-written) or Christina Lauren's relationship focus, this is your book. This is NOT paranormal or fantasy, it's grounded contemporary romance with real problems and real people.

Book 2 in the Runaway series by Devney Perry. Can be read standalone in terms of plot, but characters from book 1 appear and the series has an larger theme about people finding refuge. Reading book 1 first gives you more context about the town and its history, but it's not required.
