Everything You Need to Know About Beneath Cruel Fathoms

Isaura is a siren cursed to live on land, stripped of her voice and connection to the sea. She survives in isolation until Nerida, a sea god, surfaces in the human world and recognizes what she is. Drawn back into the underwater world she fled, Isaura finds herself tangled between the god who wants to claim her and the dangerous secrets of her past. Dark mythology, forbidden magic, and a romance that's as much about survival and identity as it is about passion.

Deen builds a hauntingly beautiful underwater mythology that feels genuinely otherworldly. The romance between Isaura and Nerida is dark and intense, there's real danger in their attraction, and neither of them is entirely trustworthy, which makes every moment charged. The world-building is rich without being overwhelming, and the pacing keeps tension high. Isaura's journey from powerless exile to reclaiming her nature is genuinely strong.

Sexual content, violence including blood magic, death, drowning themes, manipulation, and coercive situations.

Isaura's curse was punishment for something she didn't fully do, the truth of her past trauma and how she ended up on land is darker than it appears. Nerida isn't purely a savior; he has his own agenda tied to underwater politics. Isaura reclaims her voice and power by the end, but it costs her dearly. Their romance becomes something real, but it's built on mutual darkness rather than light. The ending is bittersweet, she's free, but the underwater world she returns to is as dangerous as it is home.

Readers who love dark mythology romance and don't need their heroes to be wholly sympathetic. If you enjoyed Malibu Rising's moody atmosphere or Swordheart's character-focused paranormal romance, this delivers. Skip it if you want purely light or uplifting, this is atmospheric and sometimes morally grey.

Standalone. While the world has depth that could support more stories, this novel wraps up Isaura's core arc and her relationship with Nerida conclusively.
